ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team will continue its stretch of home matches with another doubleheader at the Tose Family Tennis Center on Saturday. The Mids will play host to East Carolina at Noon before taking on Villanova at 5:45 p.m.
"East Carolina is a very tough opponent," said Navy head coach John Officer. "They are in the Carolina Region, which is very tough. We will need to have had a solid week of practice to be prepared. Also, Villanova is a much improved team."
Navy improved its record to 3-1 on the young season with a pair of victories Saturday. The Mids recorded a 4-3 win over St. Joseph's and a 7-0 victory over St. Francis (N.Y.).
Navy bounced back after losing the doubles point to the Hawks to win four of the six singles matches. Each of the four wins came in straight sets, with one of Navy's two losses coming in three sets.
Austin Jones (Fr., Dallas, Texas) was the lone Mid to record four wins over the course of play on the day. In singles, he tallied a 7-6, 6-2 win at the No. 3 flight against Pierre Brondeau from St. Joseph's, as well as a 6-3, 6-1 win over Franc Terns-Campius from St. Francis. Jones also teamed with Alex Gaines (Fr., Wilmington, N.C.) for 8-2 wins at the No. 2 (St. Joseph's) and No. 1 (St. Francis) doubles flights.
In addition to the 4-0 record compiled by Jones, Tyler Burnett (So., Fayetteville, Ga.) finished the weekend with a 3-0 record.
East Carolina enters a Friday match at George Washington with a 3-0 record this season. The Pirates posted a 13-11 record during the 2012 campaign.
The lone previous match between the Mids and the Pirates was a 7-0 win by Navy back in 1990.
Villanova will be opening its season Saturday against the Mids. The Wildcats posted a 10-12 record last season.
Navy has defeated Villanova by the identical score of 6-1 in each of the last five years.
