Saturday Night Match Closes Homestand for Men’s Tennis
ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy men’s tennis team will close its 10-match homestand Saturday evening when the Mids (15-5) play host to Fairleigh Dickinson (0-6) at 6 p.m. in the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.
“Fairleigh Dickinson will pose a number of challenges this Saturday,” said Navy head coach Chris Garner. “They have a deep team throughout their singles and doubles lineups. We will need to be playing and competing at a high level in order to have a chance.”
Navy enters the match after splitting contests last weekend against Monmouth and Villanova. The Mids narrowly fell to the Hawks by the score of 4-2 and defeated the Wildcats by the score of 4-0.
Gabriel Pilones (So., Bradenton, Fla.) posted a 4-0 record during the doubleheader. He teamed with Zach Jennings (So., Snellville, Ga.) for a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles against Monmouth and a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles over Villanova, and also recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles against the Hawks and a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles in the dual against the Wildcats.
Navy tallied a 5-2 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson last season in what was the first meeting between the programs. That loss was part of a 6-13 campaign a year ago for the Knights.
Both Navy and Fairleigh Dickinson have suffered 6-1 losses to NJIT this season. The Knights also have suffered losses to, among others, St. John’s, Hofstra and Brown.
The Mids will play each of their next eight matches on the road, starting with matches March 11 at both Campbell and Elon at the start of the team’s spring break trip to the Carolinas.
