ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team will close the home portion of its schedule Saturday when the Midshipmen play host to Richmond in an 11 a.m. match. Weather permitting, the match will be held outdoors on the USNA Tennis Courts. Should weather force play to be moved inside, the matches will instead be contested at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
"Richmond is a very talented team," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We look forward to another tough battle."
Navy successfully opened its Patriot League season by recording wins over Bucknell and Colgate last weekend in Annapolis. The Mids began the weekend by tallying a 5-2 win over Bucknell before closing it with a 6-1 win over Colgate. Four Mids -- Peter McDonald (So., Chapel Hill, N.C.) at No. 2, Blake Daniel (So., Overland Park, Kan.) at No. 3, Nicholas Gutsche (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.) at No. 4 and Alex Gaines (Fr., Wilmington, N.C.) at No. 5 -- won both of their respective singles matches against the two league foes. Daniel won a pair of three-set matches, while each of the other three players won both a straight set and a three-set match.
Additionally, Gaines and Alex Sisk (So., Clarksville, Ind.) combined to win matches at No. 3 doubles against both the Bison and the Raiders.
Richmond has compiled an 8-9 record this season. The Mids and the Spiders share seven common foes this season, with each respective team posting a 3-4 record in those matches.
Richmond tallied a 4-3 victory over Navy when the two teams met nearly one year ago to the day in Annapolis. The Spiders first won the doubles point from the Mids thanks to their No. 2 team winning in a tiebreaker, then won three of the first four singles matches to be completed to secure the overall victory.
The Spiders return their Nos. 1 through 5 singles players who faced Navy last season, while the Mids bring back four players who took to the courts against Richmond in 2012.
