Men's Tennis Home for Two Matches

Blake Daniel

April 4, 2014

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team will start a regular season ending homestand this weekend with a pair of matches in Annapolis. The Mids will play host to Temple Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and Lafayette Sunday at 10 a.m.

Weather permitting, both matches will be contested outside on the USNA Tennis Courts. Should poor weather force the matches to instead be played inside, the Tose Family Tennis Center will be utilized.

Navy opened its Patriot League season last weekend with a 5-2 win over Bucknell and a 5-2 loss to Colgate. Blake Daniel (Jr., Overland Park, Kan.) was the lone Mid to post a 4-0 record on the trip. He teamed with Calvin Mark (Jr., Union City, Calif.) for a pair of wins at No. 2 doubles, did not lose a game in winning at No. 3 singles against the Bison and won in straight sets at No. 4 singles against the Raiders. Mark also put together a strong weekend. In addition to his two wins alongside Daniel, he also lost just two games in winning at No. 2 singles against his opponent from Bucknell. His lone blemish on the trip was a straight-set loss at No. 1 singles against Colgate.

"We split our first league matches of the season last weekend on the road," said Navy associate head coach John Moreland, "and we need to get back on track this weekend at home. Saturday's match will be a test of our character since Temple won the majority of the singles flight matches in our match with them this past fall at the Navy Invitational. It will take a complete team effort to defeat Temple, but this team is hungry after the defeat at Colgate. Sunday is a big day for us, too, since we return to league play and need to win to keep pace in the league title race. The guys are ready to return to action and show that we remain a team that will contend for the title."

While Navy has put together a 14-7 record this year, Temple enters Saturday's match with an 8-10 mark this season. Both Navy and Temple have tallied victories this spring over UMES and Villanova and dropped matches to Richmond. Additionally, the Owls have recorded a 5-2 win over 2013 Patriot League champion Lehigh.

Navy posted a 5-2 victory over Temple when the teams met early in the 2013 season. The Owls also took part in the Navy Invitational in the fall of 2013. The squads played 12 matches against one another, with each winning six. The Mids claimed wins in three of the four doubles matches, while the Owls won five of the eight singles matches.

The Leopards have compiled an overall record of 3-6 this season, which includes a 1-3 record against Patriot League foes. Lafayette has defeated Holy Cross and lost to Boston U., Army and Loyola.

Last year's match between the Mids and the Leopards resulted in Navy winning all nine matches on its way to a 7-0 victory.
