Mids Head to League Men's Tennis Championship
April 18, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team will chase its second Patriot League title in as many years this weekend when the Midshipmen compete in the league tournament in Hamilton, N.Y. The fourth-seeded Mids will open play in the event against fifth-seeded Colgate Friday at 10 a.m. in the first of three quarterfinal round matches.
Weather permitting, the matches will be played outdoors on Colgate's Abrahamson Courts. If poor weather forces the matches to instead be played indoors, Drumlins Tennis Club in Syracuse will serve as the venue.
"This team is made up of a bunch of tough competitors," said Navy head coach John Officer. "When we have been emotionally ready to play, we have been very tough to beat. We will need to be focused on Colgate in the first round. They gave us a tough match in Annapolis earlier this season. We go to the tournament with a lot of pride; we always play to be champions. It will take a complete team effort throughout the Championship to be successful."
Navy defeated Colgate, 6-1, in the regular season meeting between the teams. The Mids began the dual between the teams by recording 8-5 victories at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to earn the doubles point. Navy then won a trio of three-set singles matches and five singles victories in all to pick up the overall win.
The winner of Friday's match between Navy and Colgate will face top-seeded Army Saturday at 10 a.m. in the semifinal round of the tournament. The winner of that contest will advance to Sunday's Noon championship match.
Navy has posted a 5-2 record against Colgate in league tournament play, with all seven prior matches taking place in the semifinal round. Friday's match will be the first between the teams in the championship since the 2002 season.
The Mids have compiled an 8-0 record in the quarterfinal round of the league tournament.
No. 2 Lehigh plays No. 7 Holy Cross at 2 p.m. and No. 3 Bucknell faces No. 6 Lafayette at 5 p.m. in Friday's additional two quarterfinal round matches. The winners of those two respective matches will meet Saturday at 2 p.m. in the second semifinal of the day.
Navy, Lehigh and Bucknell each lost a pair of league matches this season, and the three teams split matches against each other. That left the latest ITA rankings to determine the seeding order between the three teams.
Navy has captured nine Patriot League titles in the 19 seasons the league has utilized head-to-head tournament play to determine its champion. The Mids have won five of the last six league crowns.
