Navy Seeded Second at League Tennis Meet
Links associated with this release: ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy tennis team was seeded second in the Patriot League Championship, to be held this weekend in Hamilton, N.Y. Defending champion Army received the top seed in the tournament, with tournament-host Colgate receiving the No. 3 seed. The remaining seeds in the seven-team field will be determined Friday night. Quarterfinal action will begin Saturday morning, with the semifinals to follow later that day. The championship match will be played Sunday morning. The Midshipmen enter the tournament with a 16-10 record, including a 3-1 mark against Patriot League teams. The Mids lost at Army, while posting victories over Lehigh, Colgate and Bucknell. Individually, team captain Ben Salomon (Sr., Rochester Hills, Mich.) has posted a 13-12 record this spring at No. 1 singles. He ranks second on the team in victories to Ryan Osgood (Fr., Leawood, Kan.) who finished the regular season with a 14-10 record. Salomon won the No. 1 singles flight at the Patriot League Fall Invitational. One of Navy's strengths all season has been the play of its various doubles teams. Navy has won the lone available doubles point in 19 of its matches this year. The team of Cameron Lickle (So., Weston, Mass.) and Chris McGrath (So., Media, Pa.) have a 12-3 record this year, with victories in each of their last five matches. "The keys for this team as we head into the Patriot League Tournament is to compete as hard as we can the entire tournament and maintain our poise," commented Navy head coach John Officer. "We are a team which has to come ready to dig in and wear down our opponents with how hard we play. Our doubles has been strong all year, but we will need solid performances from each member of the team in singles, as well. We are capable of and must display the maturity gained from throughout the course of the season to be successful." Navy won the Patriot League title in four-straight years from 1996-99 before the Black Knights defeated the Mids in the 2000 championship match.
