CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- The Navy men's tennis team garnered the No. 3 seed in this week's Patriot League Tournament and will face No. 6 Bucknell in a quarterfinal round match Friday at 4 p.m. in West Point, N.Y.
Navy posted a 3-2 record in league play this season to earn the No. 3 seed. One of those wins was a 5-2 victory over Bucknell, which finished the league season with a 2-4 record.
The doubles point in that first meeting of the season between the Mids and the Bison was not decided until the third and final match was completed, and then it took a tiebreaker to be played before the point was awarded. Navy would win the breaker, 7-3, to earn the initial available team point on the afternoon. Navy then won four close straight-set singles matches to come away with the overall victory.
"Bucknell is a solid team and we had a very tough match with them earlier this year," said Navy associate head coach John Moreland. "It was much closer than the final score indicated. We will have to be ready for another tough match Friday."
The winner of Friday's Navy - Bucknell match will advance to Saturday's semifinal round where it will face the winner of the No. 2 Boston U. vs. No. 7 Loyola match. That contest will start at 2 p.m. Sunday's championship match will begin at 1 p.m..
"We are excited to have received the No. 3 seed in the tournament," said Moreland. "The team is starting to get healthy at the right time. We are looking forward to going to West Point and getting into a tournament environment. This is what you work for all year."
Navy has won five of the last seven Patriot League Tournament titles -- nine crowns in 20 seasons overall -- and has advanced to the championship match of the event six times in the last seven seasons.
