Three Mids Named To All-League Tennis Team
Links associated with this release: BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Navy tennis players Cameron Lickle, Chris McGrath and Ben Salomon garnered All-Patriot League honors, it was announced Tuesday by the league office. The trio of players helped lead Navy to an 18-11 record this season and a berth in the finals of the league tournament for the seventh-consecutive season. Lickle and Salomon were both named to the all-league team for singles, while the duo of Lickle and McGrath earned all-league accolades in doubles. Salomon (Sr., Rochester Hills, Mich.) went from appearing in only nine matches in the lower half of Navy's lineup last year as a junior, to playing No. 1 singles this year as a senior. The captain of the Mids this season, Salomon won the No. 1 singles title at the Patriot League Fall Invitational last November. He continued his strong play throughout the spring season, posting a 15-12 record. Salomon won 26 matches on the entire year and split his two completed matches with league co-tournament MVP Marshall Clay of Army. In addition, Salomon was leading Clay in the finals of the Patriot League Tournament when their match was stopped. "I think Ben is a perfect example that hard work pays off," said Navy head coach John Officer. "He was a part of very good teams in his first three years here, so he had to sit and wait his turn. When his chance to play came this year, he made the most of it. He received many compliments from other teams and coaches this year on his development." Lickle (So., Weston, Mass.) posted a 13-11 record this spring, including a 9-5 record at No. 3 singles, and won 20 matches on the entire year. Lickle won both of his completed matches at last weekend's Patriot League Tournament. Like his teammate Salomon, Lickle entered the 2000-01 campaign with limited collegiate experience. He did not appear in any matches during the spring season as a freshman and only played in four matches during the fall of 1999. "Cameron has to be considered one of, if not the most improved player in the league," said Officer. "He is a great competitor who won many matches toward the end of the season with his improved ability to come to the net. He has a tremendous belief in himself and he is never satisfied unless he has given his best effort on the court." Lickle and McGrath (So., Media, Pa.) were teamed together starting in early March and won their first six matches together on their way to a 13-5 record this year. The duo primarily played No. 2 doubles where they ended the season with a 9-4 mark. "Cameron and Chris were one of the hottest doubles team around this year," said Officer. "They have excellent doubles skills and they compete very well together. "An example of that competitiveness was in the N-Star match at Army in early April. They trailed, 4-1, and were down two breaks of serve but rallied to win, 9-7, against an Army team that would also be named to the all-league team. "Individually, Chris has a very solid all-around game and we are happy to have two more years to watch his development." 2001 All-Patriot League Men's Tennis Team
