Trio of Men’s Tennis Players Earn League Honors
ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– Three members of the Navy men’s tennis team received post-season accolades from the Patriot League on Monday. Zach Jennings (Fr., Snellville, Ga.) was named the league’s rookie (freshman) of the year, Aries Wong (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) earned first-team all-league laurels and Thomas Pecor (Sr., Houston, Texas) received second-team all-league honors.
Jennings is the sixth Mid to be selected as the top freshman in the league since the award was first presented in 2002, and the first since Calvin Mark earned the accolade five years ago. He led all Navy singles players this season with a 15-6 record in dual matches. Jennings played at five different flights but spent most of his time at the No. 5 position where he posted a 9-2 record. He also ended the regular season with a 4-0 record against league competition before going 2-1 in singles at the league tournament. Jennings would also record an 11-11 mark in doubles, which saw him appear at each of the three positions in the lineup. This included him posting a record of 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. He would compile a 3-1 record in doubles during the regular season and a 2-1 mark during the league tournament.
Wong’s accolade is the first he has earned from the league in his career. He posted a 9-3 record in singles matches during the 2017 spring season while playing in the top half of the team’s lineup. He posted a 5-3 record at No. 2 singles and tallied 2-0 marks at both Nos. 1 and 3 singles. Wong won each of the four singles matches he played against league foes during the regular season and went 1-1-1 during the league tournament. He also ended the doubles season with an 8-7 record this spring. This included a 3-2 record in league matches and a 3-0 record at the league tournament.
Pecor capped his career by garnering second-team all-league accolades for a second year in a row. He tallied a 10-13 record in singles during the dual match season, with all but two of those matches (both losses) coming at No. 1 singles. Pecor posted a 2-3 record in singles against league foes during the regular season before totaling a 1-1-1 record during the league tournament. He also played the majority of his doubles matches at the No. 1 flight. He posted a 7-6 record at the top spot in the lineup as part of his spring record of 10-8. Pecor compiled a 2-3 record in doubles against league opponents before he accrued a 1-0-2 record at the league tournament.
