CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Navy's Nicholas Gutsche (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) was one of six men's tennis players who were named to the Patriot League All-Academic Team for the sport on Wednesday.
Student-athletes must be at least sophomores at their respective schools with a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 and be starters or key reserves in their sport to be initially nominated for the team. Voting by the league's sports information contacts determined both the scholar-athlete of the year -- Lehigh's Andrew Krentz -- and the all-academic team.
The 2010-11 school year is the second season the league has awarded all-academic team honors.
A systems engineering major, Gutsche had compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 through the end of the 2011 fall semester. He has been named to the USNA's Superintendent's List twice and to the Commandant's List in four semesters. Additionally, Gutsche was named as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete following his freshman year.
On the court, Gutsche enters this week's NCAA Tournament having posted a 19-10 record in singles and a mark of 13-10 in doubles. In spring matches alone he has accrued records of 16-8 in singles and 9-9 in doubles. These latter figures include marks of 6-1 in singles and 3-3 in doubles when facing opponents from Patriot League teams. He played at No. 5 singles and teamed with Blake Daniel (Fr., Overland Park, Kan.) at No. 3 doubles this season.
Gutsche and his Navy teams, winners of the program's fifth Patriot League Tournament title in the last six years, will face No. 12 Florida Saturday at Noon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Live scoring from the match that will be played in Gainesville, Fla., will be available at NavySports.com.
