Pecor Earns League Academic Honor
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. –– Navy’s Thomas Pecor (Sr., Houston, Texas) has been selected as this year’s Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s tennis. The league office made the announcement Wednesday.
Nominees for the award needed to be at least a sophomore in the classroom, carry a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be either a starter or key reserve on their team.
A member of the Patriot League All-Academic Team in 2016, Pecor entered his final semester at Navy with a 3.54 cumulative GPA. The systems engineering major has received academic honors from the USNA in five of his seven completed terms. This year’s men’s tennis team captain received Navy pilot for his service assignment.
On the court this year, Pecor earned second-team all-league honors for the second year in a row. He primarily played at the No. 1 singles (10-11) and No. 1 doubles (7-6) positions in Navy’s lineup during the dual meet season. Pecor compiled a 3-4-1 record in singles and a 3-3-2 mark in doubles against league competition this spring.
Pecor is the fifth Mid to be named as the men’s tennis scholar-athlete of the year, with those five players totaling six awards. Navy players have now earned the award five times in the last nine years. Most recently, Walker Sims (Jr., Memphis, Tenn.) garnered the laurel in 2016.
Pecor’s accolade allows him to headline the six-person all-academic team in the league. Included on the team were three additional all-league honorees in Bucknell’s David Wright (first team), Army’s David Mitchell (second team) and Lehigh’s George Cooper (second team).
