Navy’s Sims Earns League Scholar-Athlete Nod
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Navy’s Walker Sims (Sr., Memphis, Tenn.) has been selected as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the sport of men’s tennis. The league office made the announcement of his award on Wednesday along with the naming of the academic all-league team for the sport.
Nominees for both the scholar-athlete award and the academic all-league team needed to be at least a sophomore, have a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key contributor to the team.
This is the third year in a row and the sixth time in the last decade in which a Mid has earned the scholar-athlete laurel for the sport. Sims received the award in 2016 and former teammate Thomas Pecor received the nod in 2017.
A history major, Sims compiled a 3.88 GPA over the course of his four years at Navy. He recorded a 4.00 GPA in four semesters including his final term on The Yard. He will earn his fourth ITA National Scholar-Athlete award this summer.
On the court, Sims received second-team all-league accolades as a senior. He ended the spring season with a combined 7-1 record against league foes –– 5-1 in singles –– and a 38-18 record in all during the 2017-18 campaign. Sims played at five different singles flights this spring, but primarily played at No. 4 singles where he posted a 6-4 record to help the Mids earn the No. 1 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and eventually win the tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Sims is in a tie for eighth place in Navy history with 73 career singles wins and his 120 combined victories stands 18th at the school.
He received Navy nuclear surface warfare for his service assignment and is slated to be commissioned as an ensign in the Navy during graduation ceremonies on May 25.
