CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Navy rising junior Alex Gaines (Wilmington, N.C.) and rising sophomore Tyler Tossavainen (Fleming Island, Fla.) were recognized for their academic success Wednesday by being named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for men's tennis.
Men's tennis players in the league needed to attain at least a 3.20 grade-point average for the 2014 spring semester to garner the academic honor.
Gaines posted a 3.21 GPA this spring as an international relations major. He also was named to the Naval Academy's Commandant's List for the grading period.
Gaines put together winning records in both singles and doubles during the 2014 spring season, recording marks of 9-5 in singles and a 13-8 in doubles. Those records raised his career ledger to 22-12 in singles and 27-18 in doubles in dual matches.
Tossavainen attained a 3.82 GPA in the recently completed term. A two-time member of both the Superintendent's and Commandant's lists, he has selected computer science as his major and will begin coursework in it this fall.
Tossavainen played at all three doubles flights this spring and at four of the six singles flights. He ended the dual match season with a singles mark of 10-12 and a doubles record of 5-4.
