ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team will open its fall season this weekend by playing host to the Navy Blue Invitational. The event will run Friday through Sunday in Annapolis, with its primary site being outdoors on The Yard and the Tose Family Tennis Center being utilized should poor weather force the matches indoors.
Navy will play host to Delaware, St. Bonaventure and Temple this weekend. The Mids will play the Blue Hens Friday at 3 p.m., the Bonnies Saturday at 9 a.m. and the Owls Sunday at 2 p.m.
The invite is an individual, flighted tournament that will not utilize team scoring.
"We look forward to the Navy Blue Invitational," said Navy head coach John Officer. "The three teams we are bringing in are all very solid. We are eager to begin competing. We look to improve upon our successful campaign last year with a good start to this season."
Navy returns all but one member of its starting lineup -- 2012 graduate Marcus Rebersak -- that took to the courts for its NCAA Tournament match last spring. Included among the returners for the Mids, who have won five of the last six Patriot League titles, are Calvin Mark (So., Union City, Calif.), the 2012 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, and Peter McDonald (So., Chapel Hill, N.C.), who joined Rebersak and Mark in earning first-team all-league laurels a year ago.
Rounding out the returning starters for Navy are Blake Daniel (So., Overland Park, Kan.), 2012-13 team captain Nicholas Gutsche (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.) and Tyler Burnett (So., Fayetteville, Ga.).
