Navy Men's Track Takes First Place at Six-Team Home Meet

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's track and field team (5-1) won six events and posted 10 IC4A-qualifying performances in taking first place out of six teams at Wesley A. Brown Field House on Saturday. Navy amassed 197 team points, UMES was second with 108, UNC-Wilmington was third (99), VCU was fourth (56.5), Mount St. Mary's was fifth (33.5) and American was sixth (19).
Senior Chris Ricks won the weight throw for the third time season with an IC4A mark of 57-6¼ (17.53m). Sophomore Brandon Swindler and sophomore Kyle Fortney each set PRs in the weight throw by placing third and fourth, respectively. Swindler posted a 54-11½ (16.75m) and Fortney made a throw of 53-10¼ (16.41m).
In his first race of the indoor season, senior Cody Rome won the 3,000m run with an 8:18.25, well under the IC4A standard. Senior Michael Sheehan also was under the IC4A standard, placing third with an 8:26.42. Freshman Brian De La Mora placed second in the 5,000m run with a time of 14:52.19.
Senior Ken Bunnell won the mile run with a time of 4:13.09, junior Kyle Satterwhite was second with a 4:14.69 and sophomore Cody Thompson was third with a 4:14.86. All were under the IC4A-qualifying standard. Bunnell and Thompson's times were personal records.
Sophomore Ryan Kochert made Navy's first IC4A-qualifying mark in the pole vault this season, placing first in the event with a clear of 15-9 (4.80m). Senior Paul Neidhardt was second in the event (15-3, 4.65m). Senior Josh Houston won the high jump (6-6¼, 1.99m).
Senior Alex Jackson won the 400m dash with a time of 49.68 and freshman Daniel Gallien was second with a 50.09. Junior Joshua Shaw hit the IC4A standard in the 500m run with a time of 1:04.92, placing third with a new PR.
Junior Rand Montermini placed second in the heptathlon with 4498 points. Mount St. Mary's Thomas Fitzsimons set a Wesley A. Brown Field House record with 5036 points. Tyler Blatchley, competing unattached, set a field house record in the shot put with a mark of 60-1 (18.31m).
Navy will host Rutgers, Rhode Island and Temple next Saturday at Wesley A. Brown Field House.
