Men’s Track and Field Places Second at Ross and Sharon Irwin Meet
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Navy junior thrower John Campbell (Amarillo, Texas) paced the Mids with three top-two performances, including two first-place finishes, as the Navy men’s track and field team placed second out of eight teams at the Ross and Sharon Irwin Meet in San Diego, California.
“We had a good two weeks with our sprinters and field athletes for preparation of the outdoor season,” Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey. “We look to have a strong home meet this weekend before preparing for Army at home the following weekend.”
Campbell captured the individual crowns in the hammer throw and discus. The junior thrower recorded a first-place and personal-best mark in the discus at 183ft-4in (55.88m) and then tallied a first-place throw in the hammer at 187ft-0in (56.99m).
Sophomore Sean Brennan (Westfield, N.J.) finished second in both the hammer and discus behind teammate Campbell. Brennan recorded a discus throw of 168ft-3in (51.29m) and followed up with a hammer throw of 170ft-5in (51.94m), both of which were personal bests.
Campbell followed up with a second-place finish behind teammate Griffie Loy (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) in the shot put at 54ft-7.25in (16.64m). Loy captured first in the event, tallying a throw of 55ft-9in (16.99m), which was 5.5 inches shorter than his meet record he set last season.
In the javelin, junior Anthony White (Longmeadow, Mass.), who was outdid by teammate Sean Richards (Skillman, N.J.) last weekend’s personal-best throw, threw his own personal best to place first. White recorded a mark of 214ft-8in (65.44m), which was 8ft-1in farther than his previous mark he set last season at the Charlotte Invitational. Richards finished second in the event with a throw of 200ft-8in (61.17m).
On the track, senior co-captain Nate Gainey (Ellicott City, Md.) finished first in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 48.14 for first place. Sophomore Dan Kelly (Warwick, N.Y.) finished right behind Gainey, crossing the tape at 48.57.
Sophomore Demetrius Lanier (Palm Coast, Fla.) won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.49. Junior Devin Enslen (Alamogordo, N.M.) and Lanier finished second and third in the 100-meter dash, clocking in at 10.66 and 10.80, respectively.
