The Navy outdoor men's track and field program won three field events and posted 20 top-10 performances at the George Mason Invitational on Saturday. Navy also had 11 IC4A Championship-qualifying performances. Other teams at the meet included Georgetown, Cornell, William & Mary, Princeton and Penn. There was no team scoring.
One week after breaking his own school record in the discus (185-2) in Navy's Star Meet win over Army, junior Zack Duncavage won the event with an IC4A throw of 169-10 (51.78m). Duncavage also placed third in the shot put with an IC4A mark of 53-0¼ (16.16m). Junior Kyle Fortney was fifth in the discus at 154-8 (47.14m).
Freshman Jay Stell won the javelin throw with a personal-best and IC4A-qualifying mark of 219-10 (67.02m). Entering the weekend, the mark would rank 15th on the NCAA East Region performance list and first in the Patriot League.
Sophomore Mark Vetere won the pole vault with an IC4A-qualifying clear of 16-0 ¾ (4.90m), his best height of the outdoor season. Vetere has won the pole vault in all four of his competitions this season. Junior Ryan Kochert took third at 15-5 (4.70m) and sophomore Josh Drablos was sixth at 15-1 (4.60m).
Navy had four athletes place in the top 10 in the hammer throw. Fortney was fifth at 169-5 (51.65m), junior Brandon Swindler was sixth at 168-8 (51.41m), junior Derrick Petett took seventh with a mark of 164-3 (50.08m) and sophomore Tom Buffone placed ninth at 154-4 (47.05m).
Senior Rand Montermini
cleared the IC4A standard of 6-8¼ (2.04m) to take sixth place in the high jump. Junior Rico Goldstone
placed eighth in the long jump at 22-0¼ (6.71m).
In the final event of the invitational, Navy had four runners place in the top 10 of the 5,000m run and all four were under the IC4A standard. Sophomore Zach Hebda was the top collegiate finisher and placed second overall at 14:26.29. Sophomore John Sweeney was third at 14:26.97, sophomore Brian De La Mora was fifth at 14:28.39 and sophomore Ryan Kelley placed seventh at 14:30.89.
Senior Mitch Simmonds took eighth-place in the prelims of the 110m hurdles with an IC4A mark of 14.68.
Sophomore Joshua Kingsland ran a season-best and IC4A-qualifying time of 1:51.74 to take 18th in the 800m run.
Junior Brett Bogaard placed ninth in the 400m dash with a personal-best time of 48.74. Bogaard also placed 11th in the 200m dash with a season-best time of 21.81, just missing the IC4A standard of 21.80.
Sophomore Tom Delaney placed seventh in the 3,000m steeplechase at 9:31.64 and sophomore Kyle Davis was ninth at 9:37.16.
Freshman Steve Schroeder ran a season-best time of 3:55.55 to place 34th in the 1,500m run.
Navy will compete at the University of Florida's Tom Jones Memorial next Saturday.
