Navy Men's Outdoor Track & Field Wins Three Events at North Carolina Invite

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Navy men's outdoor track and field team (13-0) had a strong day at North Carolina's Kent Taylor/Joe Hilton Invitational at Irwin Belk Track on Saturday. Navy won three individual field events and posted seven IC4A-qualfying performances. Other teams in competition included North Carolina, Syracuse, East Carolina, Duke, North Carolina State and Charlotte. There was no team scoring.

"Overall we had some good performances against some good competition," head coach Stephen Cooksey said. "Everyone competed well and we got some better performances in a couple events than what we've had this year. I'm pretty happy with the meet and the way the team performed."

Junior Miles Snelgrove took first place in the javelin with an IC4A-qualifying mark of 215-11 (65.81m). Snelgrove recorded three marks over 64 meters on the day. Freshmen Aaron Zack (184-0, 56.09m) and David Capote (182-10, 55.72m) placed sixth and seventh, respectively. Snelgrove entered the weekend ranked No. 1 in the Patriot League in the javelin and No. 20 in the NCAA's East Region.

Senior Chris Ricks won the hammer throw on his final attempt, a mark of 173-0 (52.74m). Sophomore Billy Grammer took second in the hammer throw with 170-11 (52.11m) and sophomore Brandon Swindler had a season-best mark of 165-6 (50.44m) to place fifth.

One week after setting a school record in the discus (181-6, 55.33m), sophomore Zack Duncavage registered a 170-3 (51.89m) to place fourth on Saturday. Senior Chris Boniwell placed seventh in the discus at 161-8 (49.27m) and sophomore Kyle Fortney took 11th (153-2, 46.69m). Both Duncavage and Boniwell exceeded the IC4A standard.



Boniwell also took fifth place in the shot put with a mark of 48-6¾ (14.80m).

Senior Paul Neidhardt cleared an outdoor personal best height of 16-1¾ (4.92m) to win the pole vault with an IC4A-qualifying mark. Neidhardt cleared the 16-1¾ on his first attempt at that height.

Senior Josh Houston placed fourth in the high jump, clearing 6-6¾ (2.00m). Junior Mitch Simmonds ran an IC4A-qualifying time of 14.51 to take sixth place in the 110m hurdles.

Senior Dominic Della Pelle clocked a personal record time of 3:47.69 (IC4A) to take fifth place in the 1,500m run. Della Pelle's time is the best 1,500m time in the Patriot League this season. Sophomore Weston Kennedy also set a new PR in the 1,500m with a 14th-place time of 3:51.93.

Navy placed 3-4-5 in the 800m dash. Senior Lucas Connelly placed third at 1:53.04, freshman Joshua Kingsland was fourth at 1:53.53 and senior Matt Evers was fifth (1:53.64).

Junior Kolton Kempel ran a personal record time of 49.30 to place 10th in the 400m dash and senior Alex Jackson was 11th at 49.66. Freshman Jalen Elrod placed sixth in the 100m dash with a time of 11:09 and sophomore Brett Bogaard was sixth (22.26).

Navy's 4x100m relay team placed fourth at 42.21, going under the IC4A standard of 42.50. The 4x100m relay team was comprised of Bogaard, Elrod, freshman Rico Goldstone and Simmonds.

The Mids will next compete at the Penn Relays from April 26-28.
