Maness Leads Men's Track and Field at IC4A Championship

PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophomore Jiles Maness’ (Winston Salem, N.C.) third-place pole vault finish was Navy men’s track and field’s highest finish at the IC4A Championship in Princeton, New Jersey. The Mids tallied five top 10 finishes.
“Overall, our athletes continue to compete at a high level and they sustained it for the two days we were in Princeton,” Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey said. “We will now wait to see who will qualify for the NCAA East Region meet at the end of May.”
Maness led Navy overall and in the field events with a third-place mark of 17-0.75 (5.20m) in the pole vault, which surpassed his previous season-best mark of 16-2.75 (4.95m). Maness, who was outside the top-48 in the NCAA East Region, vaulted himself in a nine-way tie for 20th in the region.
Sophomore Jay Stell (Carlsbad, N.M.) finished fourth in the javelin with a mark of 222-4 (67.76m). Senior Zack Duncavage (League City, Texas) placed eighth in the discus with a throw of 172-4 (52.52m).
Junior Thomas Buffone (Freehold, N.J.) led Navy hammer throwers with a 15th-place finish with a mark of 183-0 (55.78m). Kyle Fortney (Sr., Warrenton, Va.), Duncavage and Derrick Petett (Lexington Park, Md.) finished 19th, 22nd and 30, respectively.
On the track, senior Weston Kennedy (Sugarland, Texas) came in fifth in the 1500m run with a finishing time of 3:51.03. Sophomore Jordan Sartor-Francis (Jonesboro, Ga.) finished fifth in the 200m dash with time of 21.27.
Junior Shane O’Donnell (Norfolk, Va.) placed 13th in the 3000m steeplechase, crossing the tape in 9:07.04. Sophomore Steve Schroeder (Monticello, Ill.) came in 16th in the 5000m run with a finishing time of 14:33.58
Navy will have this weekend off from competition before the NCAA East Preliminary races, which are scheduled for May 29-31 in Jacksonville, Fla. The qualifiers will be announced on Thursday, May 22.
