JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Zack Duncavage (League City, Texas) placed seventh in the discus at the NCAA East Regional Championship on Thursday to qualify for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championship next month in Des Moines, Iowa. Thursday was the opening day of the regional meet, which is being hosted by North Florida at Hodges Stadium.
Duncavage bested his own school record with a mark of 182-11 (55.76m) on his fifth attempt to secure qualification to the national meet. Earlier in the competition, Duncavage posted a mark of 181-1 (55.21m) on his second throw to allow him to advance to the 16-person final.
"Hats off to Zack for sticking his nose in the competition and getting it done," said assistant coach Chris Campbell, who oversees Navy's throwers. "We wanted to make sure he got a hard throw in to make it to the finals and he even improved on his mark in the finals. This is going to be a great experience for him to go to the national championship as just a sophomore."
Duncavage will join the rest of the top 12 finishers from the East Region and the top 12 from the West Region at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa on June 6.
Duncavage's previous school record in the discus was a 181-6 (55.33m) and he also won the Patriot League discus title earlier this month. Duncavage vastly improved upon his 36th-place showing at last year's NCAA East Regional. He entered the competition ranked 11th in the discus.
Navy will be making a 36th appearance in the NCAA Championship and Duncavage is the first Midshipman to qualify for the outdoor national meet since Paul Harris in the 800m in 2007.
Junior Miles Snelgrove (Lebanon, Conn.) had a good showing in the javelin throw, placing 18th with a mark of 210-5 (64.14m).
Snelgrove's throw of 210-5 was his fifth-best mark of the season. Snelgrove posted his mark on the second of three throws. Snelgrove notched a 205-5 (62.62m) in his first attempt and a 206-2 (62.84m) on his last.
Snelgrove, the Patriot League javelin champion and IC4A All-East performer, improved on his ranking of 26th with his 18th-place showing at the regional meet.
The Navy men's outdoor track and field squad will continue its participation at the NCAA East Regional on Friday with senior Ken Bunnell competing in the 3,000m steeplechase at 8:50 pm.
Freshman Mark Vetere will compete in the pole vault at 11:00 am on Saturday and senior Cody Rome will race in the 5,000m on Saturday at 8:05 pm.
