JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Navy senior Ken Bunnell (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) placed 22nd in the 3,000m steeplechase at the NCAA Track and Field East Regional Championship at North Florida's Hodges Stadium on Friday evening.

Bunnell placed sixth in his heat and 22nd overall with a time of 8:58.79. Bunnell competed in the third and final heat and the top five finishers in his section advanced to the NCAA Championship.

"Ken did a really good job at a high-caliber meet," head coach Stephen Cooksey said. "He ran a good race but there were some really fast guys out there. He got off the lead pack a little but he competed very well."

The top three finishers from each of the three heats plus the next three fastest times overall, advance to the national meet.

Bunnell, in his first year of running the steeplechase, clocked a season-best time of 8:58.09 at the Larry Ellis Invite and also won the steeplechase at the 2012 Patriot League Outdoor Championship. His time on Friday was just .70 seconds off his personal record.

Navy will have two more athletes in competition at the regional on Saturday. Freshman Mark Vetere will compete in the pole vault at 11:00 AM and senior Cody Rome will run in the 5,000m at 8:05 PM.

Navy's Zack Duncavage already punched his ticket to the NCAA Championship in the discus on Thursday with a seventh-place finish.
