Men's Track Welcomes Army in Annual Star Meet
Jan. 30, 2014
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After five-straight successful home meets in the month of January, the Navy men's track & field squad (1-0) hosts its archrival Army on Saturday in the 55th star meet at Wesley A. Brown Field House. The Mids hold the advantage in the all-time series, 27-25-2, and have won the last two indoor meets.
Navy is 18-9-2 against Army in Annapolis, Md. and head coach Stephen Cooksey will look to improve his 16-9 record against the Black Knights in Indoor Star Meets.
Navy edged Army in last year's indoor meet, 93-88, and followed up with a 105-97 victory in the outdoor meet. The Mids claimed nine events and five of six in the field during the indoor meet. Six Mids from last year's indoor win prepare to defend their events, which include Zack Duncavage (weight throw), Mark Vetere (pole vault), Jeremy Granderson (long jump), Randon McKain (triple jump), Weston Kennedy (mile & 1000m) and Austin Batiste (200m & 400m).
The Mids enter the weekend ranked No. 1 in the season-opener USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region Poll. Duncavage is ranked 31st nationally in the weight throw from his 2013 Patriot League Championship mark of 19.81m.
Duncavage and freshman Khaalif Wolfe were recognized earlier in the week as Patriot League Field Athlete and Rookie of the Week for their respective performances in the Wesley A. Brown Invitiational. Duncavage set IC4A standards in both the shot put and weight throw for the second week in a row. He placed second in each event at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational at Navy on Saturday, recording a mark of 18.42 meters in the weight throw and 16.28 in the shot put. Wolfe jumped a personal-best 14.27 meters this past Saturday, which was .13 meters better than his previous best.
Navy will next compete at the Spire Invitational in Geneva, Ohio on Saturday, February 15.
