Navy Men's Track to Host Army in Annual Star Meet Saturday

Senior captain Dominic Della Pelle

Feb. 2, 2012

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's indoor track and field team (7-2) will host the annual indoor dual Star Meet against rival Army on Saturday at 11:00 am. The first of 17 events will be the weight throw at 11:00 am and the first running event will be the mile run at 12:00 pm. Heading into the weekend, Navy owns a 9-1 Star record against Army in 2011-12 and is 11-4 overall.

The all-time men's indoor series is knotted at 25-25-2. Army defeated Navy in West Point last season, 96-85. Navy won six individual events and the 4x800m relay at last year's meet. Returning event winners for Navy include seniors Cody Rome (mile and 1,000m), Chris Ricks (weight throw), Chris Boniwell (shot put) and Dominic Della Pelle (800m).

The Mids are coming off a solid all-around team performance at the highly competitive Wesley A. Brown Invitational last weekend. Navy posted 15 IC4A-qualifying marks at the event and Rome and freshman Daniel Gallien received weekly kudos from the Patriot League.

Rome was named the league's track-athlete of the week after running a 14:25.94 (IC4A) to take second place in the 5,000m run at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational. The time was the 21st best in the nation to date and Rome now ranks first on the Patriot League performance list in both the 3,000m and the 5,000m. It is his third career weekly honor.

Gallien, the league's rookie of the week, clocked a 49.66 (PR) in the 400m dash, placing ninth at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational. Gallien now ranks sixth on the league's performance list in the 400m and is the top-ranked freshman. Gallien also ran a leg of Navy's 4x400m relay team that ran a season-best time of 3:17.68 (IC4A) to place second at the invite.

Navy is currently ranked No. 6 in the season's second USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region poll. The Mids will compete at Clemson's Tiger Paw Invite next weekend.
