Men's Track and Field Sweeps Weekly Conference Honors
Feb. 4, 2013
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Following Navy's 93-88 N-Star victory over Army on Sunday, the men's indoor track and field team swept the three Patriot League weekly honors, the conference office announced Monday. Navy has now won 10 Patriot League weekly awards, the most of any school in the conference.
Junior Weston Kennedy was named the Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week, sophomore Mark Vetere was named the field athlete of the week and freshman Austin Batiste was tabbed as the rookie of the week. The Patriot League weekly honors are sponsored by M-F Athletic.
Kennedy was a double winner on Sunday, winning the mile run with a converted time of 4:06.79 and also taking first in the 1,000m (2:25.96). Both times are his personal best and the top-ranked times in the Patriot League. He is the only track athlete to be ranked No. 1 in the league in multiple running events at this point in the season.
The mile and 1,000m times are also under the IC4A Championship-qualifying standards and Kennedy has been under the IC4A mark in each of his last five races across three different events (1,000m, mile and 3,000m).
Kennedy wins the Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week award for the first time in his career.
Vetere won the pole vault with a personal-best and IC4A mark of 16-9¼ (5.11m). The height is tied for the fourth-best indoor pole vault mark in Navy history.
With his clear of 16-9¼, Vetere moved into first place on the Patriot League's performance list, a half-inch ahead of teammate Jiles Maness (16-8¾, 5.11m). Vetere and Maness are 1-2 in the league and teammates Joshua Drablos and Adam Vetere are tied for third (15-9, 4.80m).
Vetere earns his second career Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week accolade.
Batiste was a double winner at the Army-Navy meet, winning both the 200m and the 400m. Batiste clocked a converted time of 21.87 in the 200m and won the 400m in 48.31. Both times are his personal-best showings.
Batiste was under the IC4A standard in both the 200m and the 400m on Sunday and also was a part of Navy's IC4A-qualifying 4x400m relay team (3:19.07).
Batiste is ranked No. 1 in the Patriot League in the 400m dash and No. 3 in the 200m dash. He earns his second rookie of the week award of the season.
Navy has set a Patriot League record for most rookie of the week awards in one season (6) and also set a league record for having four different freshmen earn the top rookie weekly honor this season. A Navy plebe has won the rookie of the week honor for each of the past five weeks.
The Mids will next compete at the Spire Invitational in Geneva, Ohio on Saturday.
