Feb. 6, 2018

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Three Navy track and field student-athletes were selected as Patriot League Athletes of the Week for their efforts in the annual Army-Navy Indoor Star Series Meet presented by USAA as announced by the Conference office on Tuesday afternoon. Cedric Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) was named Male Field Athlete of the Week, while Chelsey Edwards (Schertz, Texas) and John Barber (Sugar Land, Texas) were named Female and Male Rookies of the Week, respectively.

Williams helped the men's track and field team to a 97-84 victory over Army to earn the indoor star. He claimed first place in the long and triple jumps, earning 10 points for the team with IC4A qualifying marks in both events. The sophomore leapt for a distance of 7.23m (23-08.75) to claim the long jump by 0.16m, which was the third best of the season. Williams now holds the top five Navy long jumps of the season. The Powder Springs, Ga. native notched the best triple jump distance of the year of 14.95m (49-00.75) to win the event by 0.66m. The mark bested his previous team-long of 14.62m (47-11.75) by 0.33 meters. Williams has Navy's top four distances in the triple jump this season.

Edwards competed in three events for the Midshipmen against archrival Army, tallying a pair of first place finishes and one second place honor. She clocked an ECAC qualifying time of 24.92 to etch her name into the Navy record book for the third time as a plebe. In her young career, Edwards holds the third, fourth and sixth best times in the 200m dash in Mids' history. The freshman cruised to a victory in the 400m dash with a time of 57.72. She ran the leadoff leg of the 4x400m relay that clocked an ECAC qualifying time of 3:51.70.

Barber posted the second-best throw of the day with a distance of 16.09m (52-09.50) in the shot put. He helped Navy get maximum points in the shot with a second place finish, behind teammate Sean Brennan (Westfield, N.J. – 16.73m / 54-10.75). The IC4A qualifying mark was his second longest throw of the season and his second consecutive meet with an IC4A qualifying distance.

Navy resumes competition this week as the women’s team hosts the Navy Multi Mix on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at Wesley Brown Field House and the men travel to Geneva, Ohio for the Spire Division I Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
