ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's indoor track and field team will compete in the 2013 Patriot League Indoor Championship at Army's Gillis Field House in West Point, N.Y. this weekend. The three-day meet featuring the league's eight schools will run from Friday to Sunday.
Navy will enter 32 athletes into the 20-event meet. Four of the seven heptathlon events will be held on Friday with the remaining three on Saturday. Saturday will feature the finals of the 5,000m, the 4x800m relay and the weight throw, high jump and long jump. The finals of the remaining 14 events will be held Sunday. The top six finishers in each of the 20 events score as follows: 10-8-6-4-2-1.
Head coach Stephen Cooksey will look to lead the team to a fifth indoor team title. The Mids won the 2011 indoor league meet before placing second to Bucknell by just 8.75 points at last year's championship. Navy and Bucknell were voted as co-favorites to win the league crown in the league's preseason poll.
Navy has had a very successful indoor season in 2012-13. The Mids won dual meets at Army and at Princeton and took first place at two team-scored home meets in January. Navy has qualified athletes to the IC4A Indoor Championship in 16 of 20 the possible events.
Navy has been ranked in the top five of the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region Poll all season and is currently No. 3.
The Mids enter the weekend looking very strong in the 3,000m run, pole vault and weight throw. Navy has five athletes ranked in the conference's top six in both the 3K and pole vault and three athletes ranked in the top six in the weight throw. Also, a Navy runner has won both the 3,000m and the 5,000m in each of the last three indoor league meets.
Navy is ranked No. 1 in the Patriot League in six events. Freshman
Austin Batiste is the top-ranked sprinter in the 400m, junior
Weston Kennedy leads the 1,000m, senior
Kyle Satterwhite leads the 3,000m, senior
Rand Montermini leads the high jump, sophomore
Mark Vetere leads the pole vault and Navy has the top-ranked distance medley relay team.
Batiste is the current Patriot League Rookie of the Week and he is also ranked No. 3 in the 200m. Junior Zack Duncavage is this week's league field athlete of the week and is No. 2 in the weight throw and No. 6 in the shot put.
Defending their 2012 indoor individual titles will be Vetere in the pole vault, senior Mitch Simmonds in the 60m hurdles and the distance medley relay team. Vetere was named the Patriot League Indoor Rookie of the Week last year. Simmonds' season-best 60m hurdle time of 8.08 is the second-best in school history.
Following the Patriot League Indoor Championship, Navy will send its qualified athletes to Boston for the IC4A Indoor Championships from March 2-3.
Championship results will be updated throughout the weekend on Army's track and field schedule page, Leone Timing and on twitter @Army_TrackXC.
