ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Junior men's track athlete Weston Kennedy (Sugarland, Texas) has been named the Naval Academy Athletic Association Athlete of the Week Presented by Rolls-Royce, for the week ending Feb. 17.
Kennedy helped Navy win the 2013 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championship at West Point this past weekend. It was Navy's fifth indoor title in the past 10 years.
Kennedy was a double winner, taking first place in both the 1,000m run and the mile run. Kennedy won the 1,000m at 2:28.54 and took first place in the mile at 4:16.14. Kennedy also ran on Navy's 4x800m and distance medley relay squads, taking second place in both events. Kennedy helped contribute 36 points to Navy's team total.
For his efforts, Kennedy was named the Patriot League Track Athlete of the Meet.
For Kennedy's event victories, he earned a pair of All-Patriot League First-Team certificates, as well as a pair of all-league second-team accolades for the runner-up finishes in the relays.
Kennedy has had an outstanding indoor season in 2012-13. He has entered eight individual races, winning six of them and placing second in the other two. Kennedy has been under the IC4A-qualifying standard in all eight of his individual races across three events (1,000m, mile, 3,000m). His season-best times are 2:25.96 in the 1,000m, 4:06.79 in the mile and 8:24.02 in the 3,000m.
He was named the Patriot League Indoor Track Athlete of the Week on February 4 after winning the 1,000m and the mile at Navy's Star Meet victory over Army.
