Feb. 26, 2013
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy senior Christopher Galvin (Austin, Texas) has been named the Patriot League Men's Indoor Track and Field Scholar Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced Tuesday. Galvin was also joined by teammates Jeremy Cadiente (Beech Island, S.C.) and Brett Bogaard (Pella, Iowa) on the Patriot League All-Academic Team.
Galvin, Cadiente and Bogaard helped Navy capture the 2013 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championship two weeks ago at West Point. The Mids won seven events and amassed 204.50 points to win their fifth indoor league title in the last 10 years. Navy also defeated Army in the indoor Star Meet, 93-88.
Galvin, who was also named the 2012 Patriot League Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year in November, has a 4.00 GPA as a mechanical engineering major. Galvin is ranked No. 1 in Overall Order of Merit among members of the Class of 2013 at the Naval Academy and has been named to the Superintendent's List and the Commandant's List in all seven of his semesters in Annapolis.
Galvin scored in both the 3,000m and the 5,000m run at the Patriot League Indoor Championship. Galvin placed third in the 3,000m run (8:20.12) and was fourth in the 5,000m (14:27.14).
Galvin has been under the IC4A-qualifying standard in all six of his individual races this year and will compete at the IC4A Indoor Championship in Boston this weekend.
Navy has won the Patriot League Men's Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for five straight seasons under head coach Stephen Cooksey. Mark Van Orden ('10) won in 2009 and 2010 and Cody Rome ('12) won the award in 2011 and 2012.
Cadiente receives his first selection to the Patriot League All-Academic Team. The junior holds a 3.74 GPA and is majoring in physics. He has been named to the Superintendent's List four times and the Commandant's List in all five of his semesters at Navy.
Cadiente earned All-Patriot League Second Team honors at the 2013 Patriot League Indoor Championship by placing second in the 500m run. Cadiente clocked season-best times of 49.01 in the 400m and 1:04.39 in the 500m, qualifying for the IC4A Indoor Championship in both events. Cadiente also placed third at the league indoor meet with the 4x400m relay team.
Bogaard's selection to the Patriot League All-Academic Team is the first league honor of his career. The junior sprinter carries a 3.92 GPA as a quantitative economics major. He has posted a 4.0 GPA in each of his last three semesters and is ranked No. 52 in his class in Academic Order of Merit.
Bogaard placed eighth in the 200m dash at the Patriot League Indoor Championship and was ninth in the 60m dash. Bogaard has qualified for the 200m dash for this weekend's IC4A Indoor Championship in Boston. Bogaard clocked a season-best time of 21.93 in the 200m at the Army-Navy Star Meet.
The IC4A Indoor Championship will run from Saturday to Sunday at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center. All three of Navy's all-academic honorees are scheduled to compete at the postseason regional meet.
