Navy Men's Track Heads to Boston for IC4A Championship
March 1, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's track and field team will send a large contingent to the IC4A Indoor Championship at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center this Saturday and Sunday. Live results will be available.
Navy has 30 athletes competing in 14 individual events and will also have relay teams competing in the 4x400m, 4x800m and the distance medley.
The Mids won the 2013 Patriot League Indoor Championship two weeks ago in their last competition and also defeated Army, 93-88, earlier this season. Navy is ranked No. 3 in this week's USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Regional rankings and has been in the top three all season.
The Mids swept the major awards at the indoor league championship. Head coach Stephen Cooksey was named the coach of the year, junior Weston Kennedy was tabbed as the track-athlete of the meet, junior Zack Duncavage was named the field-athlete of the meet and Austin Batiste was named the rookie of the meet.
Kennedy won both the mile and the 1,000m run and he will compete in the mile at the IC4As. Duncavage won the weight throw league title and was second in the shot put and will compete in both events this weekend. Batiste won the 400m league title and was second in the 200m. He will run in the 400m in Boston.
Navy scored 15.5 points at the 2012 IC4A Indoor Championship to tie for 21st place and also turned in five IC4A All-East performances (top eight). Navy's top event was in the distance medley relay, where a quartet of 2012 graduates clocked a 9:51.10 to place second.
Navy will return a pair of 2012 IC4A All-East performers in the pole vault in junior Ryan Kochert (6th) sophomore Mark Vetere (7th). Vetere recently won his third Patriot League pole vault title and Kochert tied for second as Navy swept the top four spots. Navy has five qualified pole vaulters for the IC4As, the most of any school.
The Mids will also enter five athletes into the 3,000m run and another deep event for Navy is the weight throw, where four athletes have qualified.
Senior Christopher Galvin is Navy's top-seeded runner in the 5,000m. Galvin was named the 2013 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year earlier this week.
Senior Kyle Satterwhite will be running the 3,000m run at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday. Satterwhite won the 3,000m title at the Patriot League Indoor Championship two weeks ago. Former Navy distance standout Cody Rome ('12) set the Academy record (7:55.12) and won the 3,000m run at the Alex Wilson Invitational in 2011.
This will be the last weekend of competition for the 2013 indoor season, unless a Navy athlete moves into the top-16 on the national performance rankings to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championship in Fayetteville, Ark. from March 8-9.
Currently Duncavage is Navy's top-ranked athlete on the national lists, sitting at No. 33 in the weight throw (65-0, 19.81m).
