ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's track and field program will open the 2013 outdoor season this Saturday at the Point Loma Open in San Diego. Navy is coming off a very successful indoor season that was highlighted by winning the Patriot League Indoor Championship and defeating Army in the Star Meet, 93-88.

Navy placed second at the 2012 Patriot League Outdoor Championship and also defeated Army last outdoor season at West Point, 102.5-100.0. The Army-Navy meet came down to the final event, the 4x400m relay, which Navy won by 1.23 seconds.

Navy last competition was the IC4A Indoor Championship in Boston from March 2-3. The Mids scored nine team points and placed 27th overall. Four Mids earned IC4A All-East honors by placing in the top eight.

Junior Zack Duncavage is coming off a strong indoor season that saw him earn IC4A All-East honors in the weight throw and he was also selected as the Patriot League Championship Field Athlete of the Meet after winning the weight throw and placing second in the shot put.

Now with the outdoor season set to begin, Duncavage will compete in the discus and the hammer throw. Duncavage is already Navy's school-record holder in the discus with a mark of 182-11 (55.76m) and he earned USTFCCCA All-America Second-Team honors in 2012. Duncavage placed seventh in the discus at the NCAA East Regional to advance to the NCAA Championship, where he placed 16th to earn national accolades.

Another returning NCAA East Regional qualifier is sophomore pole vaulter Mark Vetere. Vetere recently won his third straight Patriot League pole vault title and is also a three-time IC4A All-East vaulter. Vetere increased his personal-best clear during this past indoor season to 16-9¼ (5.11m).

Junior Weston Kennedy (mile) and senior Christopher Galvin (5,000m) joined Duncavage and Vetere in earning All-East honors at the IC4A meet two weeks ago.

Kennedy was also named the Patriot League Championship Athlete of the Meet after doubling in the 1,000m and the mile and Stephen Cooksey was named the Coach of the Year. Galvin was named the Patriot League Men's Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year last month.

Following the Point Loma Open, Navy will return home to host American, Delaware State and Colgate at Ingram Field on Saturday, March 23 at 10:00 AM. The Mids will host Army at Ingram on April 6.
