Navy Men's Track at Home on Saturday; Team Picked Second in Preseason Poll

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's outdoor track and field program will hold its only home meet of the 2012 season on Saturday, beginning with the hammer throw at 10:00 am at Hospital Point. The running events will begin at Ingram Field at 12 noon with the 3,000m steeplechase. Navy is scheduled to be joined by American, Colgate and Maryland-Eastern Shore. The Delaware Track Club will also be in attendance but will not be counted in the team scoring.
The Patriot League released its outdoor season preseason poll on Thursday. Navy received six first-place votes and 89 points to place second in the poll behind first-place Bucknell (94). The Mids were followed in the poll by Army, Lehigh, Lafayette, Colgate, American and Holy Cross. Bucknell won the 2011 outdoor team title and Navy was third. The league's head coaches and sports information contacts vote on the preseason poll.

Navy opened it 2012 outdoor season in tough weather conditions last Saturday at the Point Loma Open in San Diego. Despite a number of events being cancelled, Navy still won five individual events and posted two IC4A-qualifying efforts. There was no team scoring at Point Loma.
Senior captain Chris Ricks surpassed the IC4A mark in the hammer throw with a second-place finish of 175-8 (53.54m) and junior Miles Snelgrove went over the IC4A standard with a first-place showing in the javelin of 208-5 (63.53m). Senior Chris Boniwell won the discus (151-8, 46.22m) and placed second in the shot put at 47-1½ (14.36m). Senior Josh Houston cleared 6-4 to win the high jump.
The Mids had a solid outing at its first home meet last season, winning 13 of 19 events and earning three dual wins over American, Colgate and Maryland. The Navy throwers had an especially good day, as three hammer throwers surpassed the IC4A standard, including Chris Ricks, and Zach Duncavage won the discus with an IC4A throw of 157-10.
This will be the final home meet for the Class of 2012: Chris Boniwell, Ken Bunnell, Lucas Connelly, Dominic Della Pelle, Matt Evers, Jeremy Haney, Josh Houston, Alex Jackson, Paul Neidhardt, James Pearson, Chris Ricks, Cody Rome, Michael Sheehan, Craig Stocker, Isaac Teichgrab, Fleet White and Brian Zitterkopf. The Class of 2012 won the 2011 Patriot League Indoor championship and played a key role in Navy beating Army in the 2012 Indoor Star Meet.
Navy will next compete in Maryland's Terrapin Invitational on Saturday, March 31, before heading to West Point for the annual outdoor Star Meet against Army on April 7.
Only cars with Department of Defense stickers are permitted to drive onto the Yard, but there will be a shuttle service. The track and field shuttle will leave from the west side of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, beginning at 9:30 am. The shuttle is free, but parking costs $5 at the stadium. The shuttle will drop fans off at Ingram Field and will make trips between the track and NMCMS until 6:00 pm. Fans can also walk onto the Yard.
