April 1, 2013
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy freshman Jay Stell (Carlsbad, N.M.) has been named the Patriot League Track and Field M-F Athletic Rookie of the Week for the week ending March 31, the conference office announced Monday.
Stell won the javelin on Saturday at the Maryland Invitational with a distance of 216-3 (65.92m). The mark was over the IC4A-qualifying standard and ranks fifth on the Coach Stephen Cooksey era (1989-Present) performance list.
Stell also won the javelin on March 23 at the Navy Four-Team meet in his collegiate debut with an IC4A-qualifying mark of 195-0 (59.44m).
The freshman ranks first in the Patriot League in the javelin by eight feet and sits 16th on the NCAA East Region performance list.
Stell won a state javelin title in 2011 at Loving High School in Loving, New Mexico, which is just outside of Carlsbad.
Including the indoor track and field season, Navy has now had five different plebes win a total of nine rookie-of-the-week awards during the 2012-13 school year.
Stell and the Midshipmen will host Army this Saturday at 10 AM at Ingram Field in the Star Meet.
