Stell Named NAAA Athlete of the Week
April 10, 2014
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy men's track and field javelin thrower Jay Stell has been named the NAAA Athlete of the Week, presented by Rolls-Royce, for the week ending April 6.
Stell led Navy to a 124-79 victory over Army in the annual star meet last Saturday. The Carlsbad, N.M. native led the Mids with an Army-Navy and school record-breaking mark of 232-0 (70.72m) in the javelin.
The sophomore thrower's mark broke the Army-Navy record that was set by Army's Craig Young in 1989 (223-11; 68.26m) and the school's mark that was set by Stan Duplaga in 1993 (231-0; 70.42m). The 232-0 (70.72m) throw places Stell at 12th in the nation in the javelin this season, and first in the Patriot League.
Stell was also named Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week and the Corvias ECAC Division I South Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
