Navy Men's Track Heads to Penn Relays This Week

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's track and field program will compete at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia from Thursday to Saturday. Navy will compete in five relays, including three Championship of America races, and seven individual events. Live results will be available.

The Navy distance runners are competing in the three Championship of America relays, the most competitive section for collegiate athletes. Navy will run in the 4x800m, 4xMile and distance medley relay. Navy will also compete in the 4x100m and the 4x400m. Navy placed 10th in the Championship of American distance medley relay last season.

Navy will have four athletes compete in the pole vault, including junior Ryan Kochert and sophomore Mark Vetere, who both cleared 16-8¾ last weekend. Junior Zack Duncavage will compete in the discus, shot put and the hammer throw. Junior Kyle Fortney will also compete in the discus and the hammer throw. Navy will have four athletes competing in the hammer throw.

Sophomore John Sweeney will run the 10,000m and senior Mitch Simmonds will compete in the 400m hurdles. Senior Rand Montermini and freshman Jeremy Granderson will compete in the high jump.

Navy has a number of athletes that are strong contenders to finish the season in the top-48 of the NCAA's East Region to earn an invitation to the East Region Championship in Greensboro, N.C. over Memorial Day Weekend. Duncavage is Navy's top-ranked athlete at No. 13 in the discus. Freshman Jay Stell is No. 17 in the javelin and Kochert and Vetere are tied at No. 26 in the pole vault.

Navy will compete in the 2013 Patriot League Outdoor Championship at Lehigh next weekend from May 3-4. The Mids won the 2013 Patriot league Indoor Championship in February with 204.5 points.
