Navy Men's Track Prepares for the Penn Relays

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's track and field team is gearing up for the 118th Penn Relays at Franklin Field this Thursday-Saturday in Philadelphia. The meet will be Navy's final competition prior to the 2012 Patriot League Championship in Holy Cross next weekend. Live results and live video of the Penn Relays will be available on

Navy is slated to compete in four Championship of America relay races this week. The Mids received entry to the distance medley relay, sprint medley relay, 4xMile and 4x800m at the meet's highest level.

Navy will also have a number of individuals competing in championship sections this week. Senior Ken Bunnell will compete in the 3,000m steeplechase, senior Cody Rome and junior Kyle Satterwhite in the 5,000m, senior James Pearson in the 10,000m and sophomore Zack Duncavage in the discus.

Both Rome and Bunnell clocked personal records at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational last weekend. Rome ran a 14:01.36 in the 5K and Bunnell posted an 8:58.09 in the steeplechase. Three weeks ago, Duncavage set a school record in the discus (181-6).

Three pole vaulters will be in competition this weekend, as senior Paul Neidhardt and freshman Mark Vetere are in the college division and sophomore Ryan Kochert is in the Eastern division. Senior Josh Houston, the Patriot League leader in the high jump (6-10¼) will compete in the college division of the high jump.

The Mids have three hammer throwers in the college division, with senior Chris Ricks and sophomores Billy Grammer and Brandon Swindler. Senior Chris Boniwell and Duncavage will compete in the college division of the shot put and Boniwell will also throw the discus at the college level.

Navy's best performance at the 2011 Penn Relays was the 4xMile relay. Navy's 4xMile team of Rome, Dominic Della Pelle, Jeremy Haney and 2011 graduate Andrew Hanko placed sixth in the Championship of America race with a 16:32.69.

The quartet ran the following mile splits: Rome (4:09.9), Della Pelle (4:03.9), Haney (4:13.9) and Hanko (4:04.9).

Navy is ranked No. 5 in the latest USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region rankings.
