Vetere Named Patriot League Field-Athlete of the Week
April 29, 2013
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy sophomore track and field athlete Mark Vetere has been named the Patriot League M-F Athletic Field-Athlete of the Week after breaking the Navy pole vault record at the Penn Relays last weekend.
Vetere cleared 17-3½ (5.27m) to eclipse the previous school record of 17-3 (5.26m), which was set by Tom Delaney in 2002. Vetere took first place in the college section of the pole vault to win his sixth event of the season.
The Andover, Mass. native is ranked first in the Patriot League and 14th on the NCAA's East Region performance list. Vetere is almost guaranteed to finish the season in the top-48 of the region to earn a return trip to the NCAA's East Regional Championship in May.
Vetere earned a pair of field-athlete of the week awards during the indoor season and this is his third career weekly accolade.
Navy will participate in the 2013 Patriot League Outdoor Championship this Friday and Saturday at Lehigh's Goodman Campus track in Bethlehem, Pa.
Vetere is seeking a fourth Patriot League pole vault title after winning the event at the indoor and outdoor league meets in 2012 as a freshman and at the 2013 indoor league meet this past February.
Navy has received at least one conference weekly award during all six weeks of the 2013 outdoor season.
