ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
The Navy men's outdoor track and field program will compete in the 2013 Patriot League Outdoor Championship at Lehigh's Goodman Campus this Friday and Saturday. Navy was selected as the preseason favorite to win the outdoor league title in the preseason poll. The eight-team conference meet will feature 22 events over the course of two days.
The Mids won the 2013 Patriot League Indoor Championship at West Point in February. The Mids tallied 204.5 team points to win its fifth indoor title in the last 10 years.
Stephen Cooksey was named the Patriot League Indoor Coach of the Year and the Mids swept all four major awards.
Junior Weston Kennedy won the mile and the 1,000m, while also running on Navy's runner-up 4x800m and distance medley relays teams to earn track-athlete of the meet honors.
Junior Zack Duncavage won the weight throw and placed second in the shot put to earn field-athlete of the meet honors. Freshman Austin Batiste won the 400m dash and was second in the 200m to be named the league's rookie of the meet.
Duncavage's school-record discus mark of 185-2 is tops in the league and he is also ranked second in the shot put and fourth in the discus. Batiste is ranked first in the 400m and sixth in the 200m. Kennedy enters the outdoor conference meet ranked in the top-five in the league in the 800m and the 1,500m.
Sophomore Mark Vetere is the league's top-ranked pole vaulter after setting a new Navy school record (17-3½) at the Penn Relays last week. Vetere has won three-straight Patriot League pole vault titles at the most recent indoor and outdoor league meets.
Vetere heads a pole vault contingent that swept the top four spots of the event during the indoor conference meet and junior Ryan Kochert recently cleared a personal-best height of 16-8¾ (5.10m) to rank second in the conference behind Vetere.
Freshman Jay Stell has the top javelin mark in the conference during the outdoor season and Navy has the league's top-ranked 4x800m relay team.
Additional Navy individual league champions from the indoor meet were senior Kyle Satterwhite in the 3,000m and senior Rand Montermini in the heptathlon.
Navy was the runner-up in both the 4x800m relay and the distance medley relay at the indoor league meet. Individual second-place finishers at the indoor league meet were freshman Jordan Sartor-Francis (60m), junior Jeremy Cadiente (500m), sophomore Joshua Kingsland (800m), senior Mitch Simmonds (60m hurdles), senior Chris Fowler (heptathlon) and Kochert and sophomore Adam Vetere tied for second in the pole vault.
Duncavage won the discus at the 2012 outdoor league meet.
Bucknell is the defending outdoor league champion. The Bison won the 2012 outdoor meet with 167 points, while Navy was second at 153. If Navy wins the outdoor league meet, it would be the second time the program swept the conference meets after achieving the feat in 2008.
Navy has three athletes who are all but guaranteed of finishing in the top 48 of the region to qualify for the NCAA's East Regional Championship in Greensboro, N.C. from May 23-25. Duncavage is No. 14 in the discus, Vetere is No. 14 in the pole vault and Stell is No. 19 in the javelin.
Navy will next compete at the IC4A Outdoor Championship at Princeton from May 10-12. Navy has qualified athletes in 17 different events for the IC4A meet.
