Navy Men's Outdoor Track and Field Prepares for League Championship
May 3, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's outdoor track and field team (13-0) will compete in the 2012 Patriot League Outdoor Championship at Holy Cross' Hart Field this Friday-Saturday. The competition on the men's side will begin with the 10,000m run on Friday at 9:45 AM. Saturday's events will begin with the high jump and the 3,000m steeplechase at 11:30 AM.
Head coach Stephen Cooksey, a five-time Patriot League Coach of the Year, has the Mids aiming for a second Patriot League outdoor title and a sixth overall. Navy placed third at the 2011 outdoor league meet in Easton, Pa., scoring 132.5 team points and winning four individual titles. Bucknell won the 2011 team title.
Senior Chris Boniwell is the lone returning Patriot League individual champion for Navy after winning the shot put with a mark of 53-11 last spring. The Mids have five runner-up finishers from last year's meet that will be shooting for league titles in 2012. Alex Jackson is back after taking second place in the 400m, Lucas Connelly was second in the 800m, Cody Rome was the runner-up in the 1,500m, Zack Duncavage took second in the discus and team captain Chris Ricks placed second in the hammer.
Navy enters the weekend with six athletes ranked No. 1 in their respective events on the Patriot League performance list. Senior Dominic Della Pelle heads the 1,500m (3:47.69), Cody Rome is first in the 5,000m (14:01.36) and James Pearson owns a league-leading 10,000m run time of 30:06.77. Senior Paul Neidhardt is ranked first in the pole vault, Duncavage has the top discus mark and junior Miles Snelgrove is the top-ranked javelin thrower.
Duncavage set a school record in the discus earlier this season with a mark of 181-6 (55.33m).
Navy currently has five athletes ranked in the top 48 of the NCAA's East Region, keeping them on pace to earn a berth to the NCAA's East Regional in Jacksonville later this month. Duncavage has the highest ranking at No. 9 in the discus, senior Ken Bunnell is 21st in the 3,000m steeplechase, Snelgrove is 24th in the javelin, Rome is 32nd in the 5K and senior Josh Houston is 48th in the high jump. Duncavage and Rome both qualified for the regional last year in the discus and 5,000m run, respectively.
The Mids are ranked No. 5 in the latest USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region rankings. Other Patriot League teams include Bucknell at No. 7 and Lafayette at No. 11 in the Mid-Atlantic and Army at No. 12 in the Northeast.
Navy's biggest feat to date of the spring season was defeating Army in the annual outdoor Star Meet, 102.5-100.5. The meet came down to the final event, the 4x400m relay, which Navy won by 1.23 seconds to break a 97.5-97.5 tie and complete a season sweep of the Black Knights.
Following the Patriot League Outdoor Championship, Navy will compete in the IC4A Championship in Princeton from May 11-13.
