Men's Track Sending Large Contingent to IC4A Championship
May 10, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's track and field team is scheduled to have 25 competitors compete in 11 events at this weekend's IC4A Championship at Princeton's Weaver Stadium from Friday-Sunday. Navy will have six competitors in action that won individual titles at last weekend's Patriot League Championship, where Navy was the team runner-up.
Sophomore Zack Duncavage is the top-ranked discus thrower in the IC4A Region and is also ranked No. 10 in the NCAA East Region. He is virtually ensured of a second straight berth to the NCAA's East Regional Championship. Duncavage has a season-best mark of 181-6 (55.33m) and won the discus at the Patriot League Championship last weekend.
Senior Chris Boniwell, the 2012 Patriot League shot put champion, is also scheduled to compete in the discus.
Junior Miles Snelgrove took first place in the javelin last weekend. Snelgrove's season-best mark of 216-9 (66.08m) ranks him eighth in the IC4A and 24th in the NCAA's East Region. Snelgrove will likely join Duncavage at the NCAA Regional later this month to represent Navy's throwing unit. The top 48 athletes in each event advance to the regional. Freshman Aaron Zack placed second in the javelin at the league meet last weekend with his first IC4A mark of the season and will also be competing in Princeton.
Two other athletes that should receive a berth to the regional are senior distance runners Cody Rome and Ken Bunnell. Rome is 32nd in the 5,000m (14:01.36) and Bunnell is 21st in the 3,000m steeplechase (8:58.09). Bunnell won the league steeplechase crown last week.
Both Rome and Bunnell, along with seniors Dominic Della Pelle and Jeremy Haney are scheduled to compete in the 1,500m at the IC4A Championship. Della Pelle won the 1,500m at the Patriot League meet last weekend and Rome was the runner-up.
Navy will enter three pole vaulters into the field. Two-time Patriot League champion Mark Vetere will lead the way after earning his second straight league rookie of the meet accolade last weekend. Also competing will be senior Paul Neidhardt and sophomore Ryan Kochert, a 2011 Patriot League pole vault champion.
Other scheduled entries for this weekend include Matt Evers and Lucas Connelly in the 800m, Kyle Satterwhite in the 5K, Chris Ricks and Billy Grammer in the hammer throw, Mitch Simmonds and Isaac Losee in the 110m hurdles and Josh Houston in the high jump,
Navy will also compete in the 4x100m and the 4x400m relays.
The NCAA's East Regional Championship will be held in Jacksonville from May 24-26.
