Rome Named to the Patriot League Men's Outdoor Track All-Academic Team
May 11, 2012
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy senior distance runner Cody Rome (Eagle, Idaho) was selected to the 2012 Patriot League Men's Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic Team, the league office announced Friday. This is Rome's fifth career selection to an all-academic team in the sports of cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.
To be eligible for the all-academic team, student-athletes must be at least sophomores at their respective schools with a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 and be key contributors to their team. Voting by the league's sports information contacts determined the scholar-athlete of the year and the all-academic team.
The all-academic team consists of 10 student-athletes and Army's Thomas Wagner was named the sport's scholar-athlete of the year.
Rome earned a pair of All-Patriot League Second-Team certificates last weekend in helping Navy to a runner-up finish at the league championship meet. Rome placed second in both the 1,500m run (3:51.72) and the 5,000m run (14:23.72).
One of Rome's top performances of the season was a 14:01.36 at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational in the 5,000m run, the sixth-best time in school history. He was the top collegiate in the race and the second finisher overall. That time currently ranks Rome 32nd in the East Region and he should receive an invitation to a third straight NCAA East Regional Championship later this month.
Rome will be back on Princeton's track this weekend competing in the 1,500m run at the IC4A Championship.
Another highlight of Rome's outdoor season was running a 4:03 split on the 1,600m anchor leg of Navy's distance medley relay team at the Penn Relays. Navy was competing in the Championship of America race, where they placed 10th.
Rome was also a double winner at the Army-Navy Star Meet, winning both the 1,500m and the 5,000m. As a senior, he also defeated Army in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. He was the medalist at the cross country Star Meet and won the mile run at the indoor meet.
In Rome's track and field career, he won five Patriot League individual titles with four runner-up finishes.
Rome was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team in 2011 for the combined cross country/track and field team and is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree. Rome was named the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2010 and 2011 and he carries a 3.55 GPA as an applied mathematics major. His service selection is submarines.
