Men's Track Set to Compete at NCAA East Regional

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's track and field program will have six athletes in competition in five different events at the 2013 NCAA East Regional at North Carolina A&T's Aggie Stadium in Greensboro this Thursday and Friday.

The top-48 ranked athletes in each event in the East Region qualify for the NCAA East Regional Championship. The top-12 finishers in each event from the East Regional this weekend will join the top-12 finishers from the NCAA West Regional to advance to the 2013 NCAA Championship in Eugene, Ore. from June 5-8.

Junior Zack Duncavage will be Navy's first competitor at the regional when he competes in the discus at 10:00 AM on Thursday. Navy's pole vaulting duo junior Ryan Kochert and sophomore Mark Vetere will jump at 4:30 PM on Thursday.

Sophomore Joshua Kingsland will compete in the 800m run on Thursday at 8:35 PM. If Kingsland is one of the 24 competitors to advance through the prelims of the 800m on Thursday, he would compete in the next round on Friday at 7:15 PM.

Senior Christopher Galvin will run the 10,000m at 9:40 PM Thursday.

Freshman Jay Stell will throw the javelin on Friday at 12 noon.

Duncavage will be seeded seventh at the regional with his school record mark of 192-8 (58.74m). He will compete in the third of three seeded flights in the discus. The top 16 after the first three throws will earn three more attempts.

 

 

Duncavage placed seventh at the 2012 NCAA East Regional to advance to the NCAA Championship, where he placed 16th and earned USTFCCCA Second-Team All-America honors.

Duncavage won the discus at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship for the second time this spring and also earned IC4A All-East honors in the discus for a second time. This is his third trip to the NCAA East Regional.

Kingsland is seeded 44th in the 800m run. He is running in the first of six eight-man heats. The top three from each heat and the next six-fastest times advance to the next round.

Kingsland logged his personal-best 800m time, a 1:50.10, in the prelims of the IC4A Championship. He was the runner-up in the 800m at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship and earned IC4A All-East honors by placing fifth in the finals.

Galvin is seeded 24th in the 10,000m run with his personal-best time of 29:34.31, which he ran last weekend at the Virginia Challenge. There will be one 48-man heat of the 10,000m run with the top-12 advancing to Eugene.

Galvin won the 10,000m at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship with a meet record time of 29:57.26. He was recently named the Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Stell is ranked 23rd in the javelin with his season-best mark of 219-10 (67.02m). Stell will compete in the second of three seeded heats. The top 16 after the first three throws will earn three more attempts. Stell won the Patriot League javelin title and placed fourth at the IC4A Outdoor Championship to earn All-East honors.

Vetere is seeded 16th with his school record height of 17-3½ (5.27m) and Kochert is 30th at 16-8¾ (5.10m). Vetere is making his second appearance at the NCAA East Regional. He won his fourth Patriot League pole vault title and earned IC4A All-East honors for the fourth time this spring. Kochert also earned IC4A All-East honors this spring for a second time.
