May 23, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's outdoor track and field team will send five athletes to Jacksonville to compete in the NCAA East Regional Championship at North Florida's Hodges Stadium this Thursday to Saturday. Live results and live video will be available. The top 48 athletes in the East Region in each event will be competing to place in the top 12 to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship next month.
Navy's five male entries are more than the rest of the Patriot League schools combined. No other school has more than one male competitor.
Sophomore Zack Duncavage (League City, Texas) is Navy's top-seeded entry in the NCAA East Regional Championship at No. 11 in the discus, which will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday. Duncavage will throw in the top-ranked flight of three seeded heats.
Duncavage posted his school-record mark of 181-6 (55.33m) at the Army-Navy Outdoor Star Meet and he also won the Patriot League discus title this spring. Duncavage placed 36th in the discus at the regional last season.
Senior Cody Rome (Eagle, Idaho) will compete in the 5,000m on Saturday at 8:05 PM. The 48 entries will be split into two heats. The top five finishers from each 24-runner heat plus the next best two times overall will advance to the NCAA Championship in June.
Rome's time of 14:01.36 is seeded ninth in his heat and 22nd overall. This is Rome's third straight appearance at the regional meet. He placed 30th overall in the 5,000m in 2011 and was 24th in the 1,500m in 2010.
Senior Ken Bunnell (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) will compete in the 3,000m steeplechase on Friday at 8:50 PM. Bunnell will compete in the third of three heats. The top three finishers from each heat plus the next three fastest times overall will advance to the NCAA Championship.
Bunnell's personal record time of 8:58.09 seeds him eighth in his heat and 22nd overall. Bunnell took first place in the steeplechase at the 2012 Patriot League Outdoor Championship.
Junior Miles Snelgrove (Lebanon, Conn.) will compete in the first event of the meet, the javelin, at 11:00 AM on Thursday. Snelgrove will compete in the second of three seeded flights.
Snelgrove's mark of 216-9 (66.08m) is seeded 26th in the East Region and he won the Patriot League javelin title and earned IC4A All-East honors earlier this month.
Freshman Mark Vetere (Andover, Mass.) will compete in the first of two unseeded flights in the pole vault on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Vetere won the pole vault at the Patriot League Indoor and Outdoor Championships as a plebe and was also an IC4A All-East performer.
Vetere's personal record mark of 16-8 (5.08m) in the pole vault is ranked 45th in the region.
Navy is ranked No. 4 as a team in the latest USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region poll and Duncavage is ranked No. 1 in the discus. Vetere and Snelgrove are ranked second in the region in their respective events.
