June 4, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy sophomore thrower Zack Duncavage (League City, Texas) will compete in the 2012 NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championship on Wednesday afternoon at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. Duncavage will compete in the discus at 3:30 PM ET/2:30 PM CT. The discus is the first field event of the championship. Drake University is serving as the host school.
Duncavage will throw in the second of two flights on Wednesday. Each of the 24 competitors in the field will get three throws and then the top nine will advance on to a three-attempt final. The top eight overall finishers will score team points and earn All-America First Team honors. Second-Team All-America honors will go to those finishers placing from nine to 16. Duncavage is seeded 19th in the field entering the championship.
The Houston area native advanced to the NCAA Championship by placing seventh in the discus at the NCAA's East Regional in Jacksonville two weeks ago. Duncavage broke his own school record with a mark of 182-11 (55.76m) at the regional meet.
Duncavage's participation in this week's national championship will mark the 36th year the Navy men's track and field program has qualified an athlete for the outdoor national championship and the first since 2007.
Duncavage has posted four first-place finishes this season, including at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship and the Army-Navy Star Meet. Duncavage's mark of 181-6 (55.33m) at the Army-Navy Star Meet broke the school record, which he would later eclipse at the NCAA Regional.
As a freshman last season Duncavage placed second in the discus at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship, earned All-East honors with a seventh-place finish at the IC4A Championship and placed 36th at the NCAA's East Regional Championship. Duncavage's best mark in 2011 was a 171-8 (52.32m).
