Stalnaker Set to Compete at NCAA Championships
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy men's track and field standout Lucas Stalnaker is set to compete in the 10,000-meter run at the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday, June 7, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The 10,000m run will take place at 10:08 p.m. (ET).
In the NCAA East Preliminaries, Stalnaker posted his second fastest time of the season, 29:57.92, to finish third in the 10,000m and advance to the NCAA Championships. Butler's Erik Peterson won the event with a time of 29:55.06, while Samford's Arsène Guillorel took second with a time of 29:56.20. Stalnaker was third just 16 hundredths of a second faster than Kentucky's Jacob Thomson (29:58.08) who came in fourth. Middle Tennessee's Jacob Choge rounded out the top five with a time of 29:58.13.
Stalnaker qualified for the NCAA East Preliminaries with his fastest time of the year at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va. in April. The senior posted the second fastest time in Navy outdoor track and field history with a time of 29:11.82 to finish third. His time was 11.02 seconds back of John Mentzer's school-record time of 29:00.80 in the event set on April 24, 1997.
This season, Stalnaker also ran the 10,000m race at the Patriot League Championships, notching a time of 30:19.93 to win the event and claim First Team All-League honors. The Tega Cay, S.C. native won the League title by nearly 11 seconds (10.84).
