Speir Receives McCloskey Scholarship
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Navy cross country / track and field runner Ryan Speir has been awarded a postgraduate scholarship from Bob McCloskey Insurance, a corporate partner of the Patriot League, as announced by the League office.
The Bob McCloskey Insurance Postgraduate Scholarship program was established to award student-athletes, who have displayed excellence in the classroom, in athletic competition, and in the community, with a chance to pursue their future academic endeavors.
Speir, the 2016 Patriot League Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was named First Team College Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA) Academic All-District. He is a seven-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection and a 2016 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Academic All-American. The Burr Ridge, Ill. native helped the Mids to a 2016 Patriot League Men’s Cross Country Championship and a 26th-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Speir earned All-Patriot League and All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors along the way.
He finished his undergraduate career ranked first of 1,085 in the U.S. Naval Academy order of merit with a 4.0 grade point average in aerospace engineering, helping him earn a Future Leaders of Aerospace Engineering Award from Aviation Week. Speir plans to pursue a master’s degree in aerospace engineering at the University of Maryland, focusing on aerodynamics and propulsion.
Loyola women’s lacrosse standout Bailey Mathis was the women’s recipient of the McCloskey Postgraduate Scholarship.
Speir and Mathis, both members of the Class of 2017, represent the second class of Patriot League student-athletes to receive the McCloskey Scholarship. Loyola’s Rosy Hayes and Boston’s Rachel Blauner earned the inaugural postgraduate scholarships following the 2015-16 academic year.
