CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Navy cross country / track and field runner Ryan Speir has been awarded a postgraduate scholarship from Bob McCloskey Insurance, a corporate partner of the Patriot League, as announced by the League office.

The Bob McCloskey Insurance Postgraduate Scholarship program was established to award student-athletes, who have displayed excellence in the classroom, in athletic competition, and in the community, with a chance to pursue their future academic endeavors.

Speir, the 2016 Patriot League Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was named First Team College Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA) Academic All-District. He is a seven-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection and a 2016 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Academic All-American. The Burr Ridge, Ill. native helped the Mids to a 2016 Patriot League Men’s Cross Country Championship and a 26th-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Speir earned All-Patriot League and All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors along the way.

He finished his undergraduate career ranked first of 1,085 in the U.S. Naval Academy order of merit with a 4.0 grade point average in aerospace engineering, helping him earn a Future Leaders of Aerospace Engineering Award from Aviation Week. Speir plans to pursue a master’s degree in aerospace engineering at the University of Maryland, focusing on aerodynamics and propulsion.
