ANNAPOLIS, Md. - For the first time in his career Jay Stell (So., Carlsbad, N.M.) will compete in the NCAA Track and Field Championship Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Stell will compete at 3:35 p.m. ET/12:35 p.m. PT in the javelin.

Stell will throw in the second of two flights on Saturday. Each of the 24 competitors in the field will get three throws and then the top nine will advance on to a three-attempt final. The top eight overall finishers will score team points and earn All-America First Team honors. Second-Team All-America honors will go to those finishers placing from nine to 16.

Stell is the fifth Navy men's track and field student-athlete to compete at the NCAA Championship as a sophomore. The four other Midshipmen to compete as sophomores were  Zack Duncavage (Discus in 2012), Paul Harris (800m run in 2006), Stan Duplaga (javelin in 1993) and Leo Williams (High Jump in 1981). Williams has the highest finish of the group with a first-place finish.

Stell advanced to Eugene, Ore. with a personal-best mark of 234-1 (71.35m) to place fourth in the final round of the NCAA East Region Preliminaries two weeks ago. Stell's mark of 234-1 was the fourth farthest throw amongst competitors in both the East and West Region preliminaries.

The Carlsbad, N.M. native has shown much growth in his throwing abilities in just his second season. Stell has begun to leave his mark in the program's record book, breaking the school, Army-Navy meet and Ingram Field records this past year. He snapped Army-Navy meet record in West Point with a throw of 232-0 (70.72m), which also broke the school record at the time. Stell then broke the Ingram Field record at the Patriot League outdoor championship with a mark of 228-8 (69.69m). He then improved his mark of 232-0 with a performance of 234-1 at the NCAA East Region preliminaries to re-establish the school record.

As a freshman, Stell finished first in the javelin at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship, earned All-East honors at the IC4A Championship and placed 14th at the NCAA East Regional Championship. Stell's season-best mark in 2013 was a 223-1 (68.00m).
