June 24, 2013
Des Moines, Iowa - Rising sophomore javelin thrower Jay Stell (Carlsbad, N.M.) earned a spot on Team USA for the 2013 Pan American Junior Games this past weekend. The games will be held in Medellin, Colombia from August 23-25.
The USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships serve as the selection meet for the 2013 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships. The national meet was held this past weekend at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
Stell placed fourth at the national meet with a throw of 211-3 (64.40m). However, it is the top two finishers in each event with a world-qualifying standard that make the national team. Stell had surpassed the world standard of 218-12 (66.50m) twice this year, while the second and third-place finishers at the national meet had not, which allowed Stell to make the team.
Stell and William and Mary's rising sophomore Bob Smutsky are the two javelin throwers named to Team USA. Smutsky won the javelin title at the USA Junior meet with a mark of 226-8 (69.08m).
Stell won the Patriot League javelin title this past spring and was named the rookie of the meet. He also earned IC4A All-East honors and placed 14th at the NCAA East Region Championship.
Countries from North America and South America compete at the Pan American Games and athletes must be between the ages of 16 and 19 to be eligible for the Junior Games.
