Track and Field Boasts League-High 43 on Academic Honor Roll
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- The Navy men's track and field team placed a league-best 43 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, as announced on Friday morning by the conference office.
Track and field athletes from the nine league schools needed to attain at least a 3.20 grade-point average for the 2017 spring semester to earn the laurel. Two-hundred and thirty-four (234) men's track and field student-athletes were named to the honor roll, including 23 who posted a 4.00 grade point average for the grading period. Headlining the Mids' recipients was 2017 First Team CoSIDA Academic All-American and 2016 Patriot League Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year Ryan Speir (Burr Ridge, Ill.). The member of the Class of 2017 recorded a 4.00 GPA as an aerospace engineering major. The future Navy pilot ranked first among his USNA classmates in the Academic Order of Merit. He earned Naval Academy academic accolades all eight semesters, including being named to the Superintendent's List five times.
Team captain Nate Gainey (Ellicott City, Md.), who was a 2017 First Team Academic All-District selection, also notched a 4.00 GPA during the semester in applied mathematics. The 2017 graduate finished tops among his classmates in Military Order of Merit. He was a five-time All-Patriot League performer earning the distinction in the 500-meter run (indoor 3x) and the 4x400m relay (indoor 2x).
