Lanzel And Schmidt On WCEM Tuesday
ANNAPOLIS, Md.-ENS Aaron Lanzel, USN ('03) and 2nd Lieutenant Erik Schmidt, USMC ('04) will be on WCEM 1240 AM (ESPN Radio) Tuesday at 12 noon. Schmidt and Lanzel have qualified for the 2004 United States Track & Field Olympic Trials, which is currently taking place at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif. Both runners have qualified in the 1500 meters with Lanzel entering the trials with the 23rd best time and Schmidt the 30th best time.
The trials will be a test of endurance as much as speed as those advancing to the finals will have to run three times over a four day span. The1500-meter trials will start on Thursday, July 15 when the field of 30 will be cut to 24. The following day they will run again to cut the field to 12 and then after a day of rest the finals will take place on Sunday, July 18 with the top three making the Olympic team.
With Lanzel and Schmidt making the trials this year, Navy has now had at least one runner participate in the last three Olympic trials. In 2000, Mike Ryan made the finals in the 1500 meters, while in 1996 Ronnie Harris made the Olympic team by finishing third in the 5000 meters.
For more information on the Olympic Track & Field trials go to http://www.usatf.org/events/2004/OlympicTrials-TF/ for complete results and television listings. NBC and USA will combine to air 14 hours of coverage over eight nights, including all three nights of the 1500 meters.
