Former Navy Head Men's Cross Country And Track & Field Coach Passes Away

Jim Gehrdes, who was the head men's cross country coach from 1952-1967 and the head men's track & field coach from 1964-81, passed away on Friday.

Visitation will be Monday, August 6 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Taylor Funeral Home (147 Duke of Gloucester Street) and the funeral service will take place on Tuesday, August 7 at 11:30 AM. Interment will be at the Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville at 1:00 PM.

Gehrdes led the men's cross country team to three Heptagonal titles and coached two NCAA champions and seven All-American in track (Ted Bregar in the weight throw in 1973 and Leo Williams in the indoor and outdoor high jump in 1981).

Gehrdes was a 1950 graduate of Penn State, where he was team captain of the track team. He served 33 months in the Army where he earned four bronze stars.
